After a tough two nights in Chicago, the Muskegon Lumberjacks salvaged a big win this weekend by knocking off the Dubuque Fighting Saints 7-4 in Dubuque, Iowa on Sunday afternoon.

Forward Cody Croal led the Jacks with two goals, his fifth and sixth of the season. Jake Richard turned in three assists to bring his season total to 11.

The victory allowed the Jacks to collect three out of a possible six points this weekend. They picked up one point in an overtime loss in Chicago on Friday and two points with the win on Sunday.

The Lumberjacks are now 11-8-1 on the season with 23 points in the USHL Eastern Conference standings. They’re tied with Team USA for second place in the very tight conference standings, seven points behind first-place Chicago.

They will return to action next Friday with a home game against Team USA.

The Lumberjacks led 2-1 after one period with goals from Croal and EthanWhitcomb, his 11th of the season. Max Burkholder scored for Dubuque.

The Jacks had a 3-2 advantage in goals in the second period and led 5-3 headed into the third. Croal, David Hymovitch and Owen Mehlenbacher found the net for Muskegon while Max Montes scored twice for Dubuque.

The Fighting Saints pulled within one goal when Nils Juntorp scored 1:29 into the third period. The Jacks responded with a goal from Jack Reimann, his first of the season, and an empty-netter by Gavin McCarthy to seal down the win.

Muskegon goalie Conor Callaghan stopped 29 of 33 shots to collect the win. The Jacks’ penalty-killing unit, which has been playing very well lately, kept Dubuque scoreless on five power play chances.
