Whitehall and Spring Lake opened the boys basketball season with an exciting non-conference game Tuesday night. The Vikings edged the Lakers 64-61 to start the season with a win.
Whitehall led 16-11 after the first quarter and 27-26 at halftime. The teams played an even third, with the Vikings taking a 48-47 lead to the final quarter.
Spring Lake rallied to take the lead late, but a basket by Camden Thompson put the Vikings up 62-61 in the final minute.
Thompson led Whitehall with 19 points, followed by Kai Koehler with 15 and Ca’Mar Ready with 12.
Zane Stahl led Spring Lake with 15 points, followed by Eli Morrison with 13 and Zach Schlepp with 11 points and six rebounds.
Whitehall starts 1-0 with the win, while Spring Lake drops to 0-1.
Will Chye powers Mason County Central past Manistee
The Spartans grabbed control with a big second quarter and cruised to a 70-45 win over Manistee in their season opener Tuesday night.
Will Chye scored 34 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead MCC. Jayden Perrone recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
The game was tied 12-12 after one quarter before MCC exploded for a 20-2 edge in the second and led 32-14 at the half. A 25-14 edge in the third pushed the lead to 57-28 heading to the fourth.
The Spartans begin the year 1-0.
Ludington wins high-scoring game with Grant
The Orioles held off a pesky Grant team in an 87-74 win to open the boys basketball season Tuesday night.
Grant led 11-10 after one quarter before the Orioles rallied to lead 33-30 at halftime. Ludington led 59-48 after the third quarter. Grant got as close as six points in the fourth, but the Orioles held on for the win.
David Shillinger led Ludington with 25 points. Spencer Holmes added 20 points and Levi Laman scored 11.
Ludington opens the season 1-0.
Hart cruises past Wyoming Kelloggsville in opener
The Pirates picked up a big win on opening night, winning by a score of 68-30.
Parker Hovey led Hart with 22 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Blake Weirich scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
Fremont tops Shelby 53-33 in season opener
Jordon McDonald led the Packers with 25 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks in the win. Chaz Miller and Gavin Richards added four points each, with Richards grabbing 13 rebounds.
Bishop Lee led Shelby with nine points and seven rebounds. Wyatt Dickman scored seven for the Tigers.
Fremont led 12-6 after one quarter and 26-14 at halftime before pulling away in the second half.
WMC falls to Calvin Christian in opener
The Warriors fell behind early and never recovered, losing 73-47. Western Michigan Christian trailed 26-4 after one, 41-13 at halftime and 54-22 after three quarters.
Ben Moorhead led WMC with seven points. Caleb Tejchma, Cody Folkema, Sam Sipe and Fisher Campbell scored six points each.
Montague opens with win over Newaygo (Monday)
The Wildcats used a big fourth quarter advantage to pick up a season-opening win Monday night. Montague trailed 43-40 heading to the final quarter, but used a 22-11 edge in the final quarter to win 62-54.
Montague led 29-25 at halftime, and the game was tied 11-11 after one quarter.
Paul Olsen led the Wildcats with 17 points. Owen Petersen and Braeden Johnston scored 11 each, while Isaiah Atchison had nine points and 12 rebounds.
