Reeths-Puffer girls open the season on a sour note, falling 41-34 to Big Rapids on the road

The Reeths-Puffer girls basketball team got off to a rough start to the season on Tuesday, falling 41-34 to Big Rapids in a non-conference road game.

The host Cardinals gained an early advantage by outscoring the Rockets 17-7 in the first quarter. R-P fought back and had a 14-7 edge in the second quarter and trailed 24-21 at halftime.

The third quarter was as cold as could be, with neither team scoring a single point.

R-P’s Sophia Hekkema, who had eight points and seven rebounds in the loss. 

Big Rapids nailed down the win with a 17-13 edge in the fourth quarter.

The Rockets were cold from the floor all night, hitting only 11 of 29 shots from two-point range and 3 of 9 from three-point range. They were also 3-for-9 from the free throw line.

Ariel Walker led Reeths-Puffer with 11 points, Billie Tryska and Sophie Hekkema each added eight and Brooklyn Tornes had seven. Hekkema snagged seven rebounds while Tornes and Irelyn Niklasch each grabbed five.

Kelsie Gorzewicz had a game-high 19 points for Big Rapids. [2] [3]
