The final week of regular season high school football is already upon us, and what a season it has been for some Muskegon County teams.
We’ve seen the revival of the Reeths-Puffer program under first-year head coach Cody Kater, who will lead his team to Lansing Everett this weekend in search of a playoff berth.
Another fascinating local headline has been Fruitport, which rebounded from a 2-2 start and will host Holland Christian with a chance to win a share of the O-K Blue conference championship.
We’ve watched Mona Shores soar with a sophomore quarterback who will get his first taste of Big Red pressure on Friday night. We’ve watched North Muskegon have its best season in years under another sophomore quarterback. We’ve watched Whitehall cream everyone in sight, leaving us wondering if this is the Viking squad that will make that big run in the playoffs.
You have also been treated to amazing picks by yours truly – particularly in Week 6 when I got every game right and showed the other MuskegonSports.com writers just how easy this can be.
I hope to continue my streak of perfection this week while sorting through an interesting slate of games, including the annual Muskegon-Mona Shores showdown.
MuskegonSports.com will be at that game with reporter-photographer coverage, along with Holland Christian at Fruitport and Hart at Ravenna. Remember to check out our website or social media sites for all the results on Friday night and Saturday morning.
Now, without further ado, here are my perfect picks for this week:

MANISTEE (5-3) at Fremont (4-4) – The Packers have had a notable turnaround season, but after Manistee shredded through Montague last week, it’s hard to pick against the Chippewas. As a Tri-County grad, I must admit that I’m a little biased, because Fremont was our rival back in those days.
Holland Christian (3-5) at FRUITPORT (6-2) – The Trojans have not won more than last six games since 2012, when they went 8-2. This team has a conference championship to play for, and I fully expect Fruitport to come out and grab that trophy.
Grand Haven (1-7) at HUDSONVILLE (2-6) – With both teams down this season, I’m giving the slight nod to Hudsonville, but it should be a competitive and fun season finale.
Hart (6-2) at RAVENNA (5-3) – Hart’s Hart football season has been remarkable, while Ravenna is coming off tough back-to-back losses. I expect the Bulldogs to bounce back while Hart falls just short of a playoff berth.
Holton (0-8) at HESPERIA (1-7) – These two programs have had better seasons in recent years. I think Hesperia will emerge victorious on its home field and go into the offseason with rivalry bragging rights.
Grant (1-7) at KENT CITY (6-2) – After starting the season 6-0, it looked like the Eagles were destined for great things. Now they need to bounce back and get things on track before the playoffs. I think Kent City will look like the Eagles we saw earlier in the year.
Mason County Central (3-5) at LUDINGTON (6-2) – The Orioles have had one of the quietest successful seasons I can remember. The Orioles will warm up for the playoffs by easily dispatching their next-door rivals.
MONA SHORES (7-1) at Muskegon (6-2) – Mona Shores got smacked with a 49-28 loss to Muskegon last season. The Sailors would like to return that punch on Friday night, and I fully expect them to do so with a convincing win.
OAKRIDGE (7-1) at Montague (3-5) – This isn’t a typical Montague team of recent seasons. The Wildcats may keep it close, due to the game being a rivalry, but I’m confident the Eagles will enter the playoffs with an 8-1 record.
MUSKEGON CATHOLIC (6-2) at Tri County (7-1) – This is a tough one for me, the Tri-County alum. I’m proud of what my Vikings have accomplished this season, but they haven’t seen a defense as nasty or as tough as Muskegon Catholic’s. The Crusaders will take care of business with a road victory.
Muskegon Heights (0-8) at MCBAIN (4-4) – I feel heartbroken for Muskegon Heights after an excellent 6-5 season in 2021. The Tigers lost their head coach just as practice kicked off in August and have yet to taste victory this season. Unfortunately, I don’t believe they will on Friday night either.
NORTH MUSKEGON (7-1) at Shelby (2-6) – The Norse will be rested after a forfeit victory over Holton in Week 8, and their starters will probably get even more rest before this one is over.
REETHS-PUFFER (5-3) at Lansing Everett (2-5) – The Rockets have lost three games to high quality opponents this season. Lansing Everett is not a quality opponent, and I expect the Rockets to take care of business and head back to postseason play for the first time since 2013.
Spring Lake (3-5) at COOPERSVILLE (5-3) – The Lakers have had an up-and-down season this year, and have found some momentum with back-to-back victories the last two weeks. But I think they’ll fall just short on Friday after experiencing a momentous high with a victory over Unity Christian last week.
