Muskegon Lumberjacks coach Mike Hamilton said this week that he wanted his team to start winning on the road, and apparently the message sank in.
The Jacks overcame a two-goal deficit on Friday, fell behind by a goal again, then exploded for three goals in the third period to skate off with a 5-3 road victory over the Madison Capitols.
Jake Richard led the way with two goals for Muskegon. Tyler Dunbar had two assists.
[1]The Jacks are now 5-4-0 on the season while Madison fell to 4-4-0. Muskegon is now in fourth place in the USHL’s Eastern Conference with 10 points, two points ahead of Madison.
Madison grabbed a quick 2-0 lead after one period on goals by Miko Matikka at 10:39 and Matt McGroarty at 15:08.
The Lumberjacks tied the game with a pair of second-period goals. Justin Solovey scored his second of the season at the 13-minute mark and Richard scored his fourth at 13:49.
Madison took a 3-2 lead when Quinn Finley found the net with under four minutes left in the second period.
The Jacks stole the lead for good down the stretch, getting quick third-period goals from Richard at 3:01 and David Hymovitch (his third of the season) at 3:37.
Rookie Sacha Boisvert scored his fourth goal at the 16:29 mark to put a cherry on the victory.
Lumberjacks goalie Conor Callaghan stopped 32 of 35 shots to win his fourth straight start.
The two teams will play again in Madison on Saturday night.
