Volleyball roundup: Whitehall, North Muskegon, Montague all pick up conference wins

The Whitehall volleyball team opened conference play Tuesday night with a straight sets win over Oakridge. Whitehall won by scores of 25-23, 25-18 and 25-21. 

Arriana Black led the team with 18 kills and 15 assists. Sydney Shepherd had 42 assists on the day. Kayla Mulder had 13 kills and five aces for the Vikings, while Chase Baker added 12 digs. 

Madison Babinec, Kaelinn Jozsa, and Gracie Clark all had three kills for Oakrigge. Gracie Willea had 13 assists. The Eagle’s defense was led by Ahria Doornbos and Mallori Whipple with a combined total of 22 digs. 

Whitehall moves to 5-10 and 1-0 in conference play, while Oakrige falls to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

Norse top Panthers to open conference play

North Muskegon beat Hesperia Tuesday night in the West Michigan Conference opener for both teams. The Norse won in four sets by scores of 25-9, 25-22, 22-25 and 25-16.

Natalie Pannucci led the team with 16 kills and four aces. She also had a team high 17 digs. Sami Baker added 29 assists and five aces, while Allie Jensen had eight kills and Fia Lindsay had seven. 

Jaley Schultz had 15 digs for the Norse and Baker added nine. Lindsay had a team-high four blocks.

North Muskegon is now 3-3-3 on the season and 1-0 in the WMC Rivers division.

Kent City sweeps Newaygo

Kent City volleyball took down Newaygo in quick order Tuesday night defeating them in three sets. The Eagles won by scores of 25-17, 25-17 and 25-18.

Lexie Bowers led the Eagles with 12 kills, 20 digs and three aces. Jacee Hoffman had 31 assists and two aces. Madelyn Geers added 11 kills and two blocks, while Ayzlyn Scheuneman had six kills.

Kent City moves to 10-4-1 and 2-0 in conference play.

Catholic sweeps Muskegon 

Muskegon Catholic Central took care of business Tuesday night, defeating Muskegon in three sets. The Crusaders won by scores of 25-10, 25-9 and 25-8. 

The Crusaders were led on offense by Claire LaVigne with 12 assists and nine aces. Ella Muskovin had 12 aces, while Natalie Rich added eight. Lindsay Ladd led the way with six kills and Clare Carlton added five.

Elena LaGuire led the defense with seven digs and LaVigne chipped in five. 

Muskegon Catholic moves to 3-5 on the season.

Wildcats sweep Fremont in conference opener

The Montague volleyball team opened conference play with a three-set victory of Fremont Tuesday. The Wildcats won by scores of 25-18, 25-22 and 25-17.

Anastasia Trevino led the Wildcat offense with 11 kills, followed by Britta Johnson with seven. Laura Borras added four kills and two aces, in addition to a team-high 11 digs. Jaelyn Sundberg contributed 24 assists.

Alissa Wynn led the team in digs with eight. Sundberg and Maizie Collins had five digs each.

Montague is now 3-9 on the season and 1-0 in the West Michigan Conference.

Holton tops Ravenna in four sets

The Red Devils volleyball team won its first conference match as members of the West Michigan Conference Tuesday night. Holton went on the road and beat Ravenna in four sets.

Holton took the first two sets 25-19 and 25-22 before Ravenna took the third set 25-18. The Red Devils closed out the win with a 25-18 edge in the fourth set. 

Abbie Fowler led the offense with 24 assists and three kills, while adding two aces. Courtney Boes had eight kills and two aces, while Ryann Robbins had seven kills, four blocks and two aces. Katie Petersen added 15 digs, two assists and one ace. 

Holton’s overall record this year is now 6-5. 

Pirates pick up three-set win over Orchard View

Hart and Orchard View opened West Michigan Conference play Tuesday night. The Pirates swept the Cardinals, winning by scores of 25-14, 25-19 and 25-11. 

Mariana VanAgtmael had 14 digs and three aces. Addi Hovey led the team with 10 kills while adding five digs and four blocks. McKayla Rockwell had six digs and three kills, while Rayah Helenhouse had four kills. 

Hart is now 7-1-1 on the season.
