WHITEHALL – One of the most popular words in all of sports is “potential.”

Some people may say the Vikings have reached their potential following a 60-6 drubbing of rival Montague on Friday night.

While a victory like that seems pretty convincing, the undefeated Vikings are convinced they can get even better.

“I think we have more levels,” said senior wide receiver Nate Boley, who totaled 33 yards and one touchdown on three catches while also intercepting two passes and scoring a rushing touchdown in the victory. “We’re taking it just one game and one practice at a time. We’re getting there, but the sky is the limit.”

“We’re 4-0, but I don’t want to get too far ahead of ourselves,” said Whitehall Coach Tony Sigmon. “Next week we’ll play another team, and this will all go away if we don’t pay attention to them.”

That being said, Sigmon couldn’t help but be happy with his team’s performance.

“They really are a mature group,” the coach said. “They work their tails off during the week. This is the dividends of that work. We work for outcomes like this. It’s really tough and competitive in practice.”

Whitehall is now 4-0 overall on the season and 1-0 West Michigan Conference Lakes Division play. The Vikings will host Manistee next Friday in another divisional game.

The Vikings started the scoring quickly when quarterback Kyle Stratton scampered to the end zone on a 19-yard touchdown run on the opening possession.

Whitehall dominated the quarter with a one-yard touchdown run by Bolley, a 48-yard touchdown run by Stratton and a 32-yard touchdown pass from Stratton to Trannon Aylor to take a 27-0 lead.

In the second quarter, Stratton found Camden Thompson for a 37-yard touchdown pass and Everett Napier returned an interception for a touchdown to give Whitehall a 40-0 lead.

Montague got on the scoreboard late in the second quarter when QB Chase Gowell found Owen Petersen for 58-yard touchdown pass to make the halftime score 40-6.

The lone third quarter touchdown was a 19-yard pass from Stratton to Bolley, which made the score 47-6.

Darnell Mack punched in touchdown runs of one-yard and 18-yards in the fourth quarter to finish off the scoring.

“So much fun,” said Stratton about his big night, which totaled 165 rushing yards, 149 passing yards and five total touchdowns. “My line and my teammates really helped me. It’s a total team effort every time we win. Everyone does so much for us.”

Mack finished with 76 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries while Thompson totaled 54 yards and one touchdown on two catches.

Gowell led Montague with 134 yards and one touchdown on 11-of-22 passing while Petersen finished with 81 yards and one touchdown on three catches.

Napier led the Vikings with 5.5 tackles and one interception while Thompson also had an interception.

Montague is now 2-2 overall and 1-1 in divisional play. They’ll next travel to Ludington for a divisional contest.
