Spring Lakes holds on to beat Zeeland East 21-14 and capture its first victory of the season

The Spring Lake football team held off a late Zeeland East rally to take home a 21-14 road victory on Thursday night.

After a scoreless first quarter, Reid Grimmer found Jackson Lemmen for a 32-yard passing touchdown with 4:52 left in the second to give the Lakers a 7-0 halftime lead.

In the third quarter, Grimmer found Colin Burt for a seven-yard passing touchdown to give the Lakers a 14-0 lead with 3:39 left.

Zeeland East cut the score to 14-7 with 10:01 remaining in the fourth quarter on a 34-yard touchdown pass from Austin Keur to Eli Walcott.

Grimmer responded with a three-yard rushing touchdown to extend the Spring Lake lead to 21-7 with 3:33 remaining.

Keur threw a 36-yard touchdown pass to Noah DeWitt, but Zeeland East couldn’t get any closer.

Grimmer finished with 110 yards and two touchdowns on 6-of-8 passing while Bryce Collins led the Laker rushing attack with 54 yards on six carries.

Lemmen led the Spring Lake receivers with 63 yards and one touchdown on three catches while Alex Lee led the defense with 6.5 tackles.

Spring Lake is now 1-1 and will next host Grand Rapids West Catholic next week. [1]
