Spring Lake gives up late score, falls in heartbreaking fashion 21-20 to Holland Christian

The Spring Lake football team fell in heartbreaking fashion on Friday night, allowing a late touchdown that gave Holland Christian a 21-20 victory.

With just 2:32 remaining in the game, a 45-yard touchdown pass gave Holland Christian a 21-20 lead over the Lakers, which was ultimately the final.

Jack Duggins gave Spring Lake a 6-0 first quarter lead on Friday with a interception returned for a touchdown.

After Holland Christian took a 7-6 lead, Reid Grimmer connected with Jackson Lemmen for a nine-yard touchdown to put the Lakers back ahead 13-7 with 6:07 left in the second.

Holland Christian responded to take a 14-13 lead with just 1:13 remaining in the first half.

However, a 23-yard touchdown pass from Grimmer to Lemmen put the Lakers ahead with 39 seconds left in the second quarter and ultimately gave Spring Lake a 20-14 halftime lead.

The two teams went scoreless the remainder of the game until the final Holland Christian touchdown.

Grimmer led the Lakers with 65 yards and two touchdowns  on 5-of-11 passing while Bryce Collins totaled 61 rushing yards on 13 attempts.

Lemmen led the Spring Lake receivers with 32 yards and two touchdowns.

Duggins led the defense with 5.5 tackles and the interception.

Spring Lake is now 1-4 overall on the season and 0-3 in O-K Blue Conference play. They’ll host rival Fruitport next week.
