The Grand Haven football team bounced back from an opening-week loss with an impressive 49-21 victory over Traverse City West on Thursday night.

Sophomore quarterback Xzavier Rodriguez had a huge breakout game, completing 13 of 14 passes for 279 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed 18 times for 201 yards and another three touchdowns.

The Buccaneers jumped all over TC West in the first quarter, with an 18-yard touchdown pass from Rodriguez to Alex Dixon, a 22-yard scoring run by Rodriguez, and a 46-yard TD pass from Rodriguez to Aiden Ray.

TC West returned a kickoff for a touchdown and Grand Haven led 21-6 after one quarter.

TC West added a touchdown and two-point conversion in the second quarter to make it a one-score game, then the Bucs answered with a two-yard TD plunge by Lance Poole to take a 28-14 halftime lead

Rodriguez heated up again in the third quarter, throwing a 17-yard scoring pass to William Korenstra, then running in touchdowns from 9 and 47 yards out.

Traverse City West scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter, but it was too little, too late.

Korenstra hauled in eight passes for 166 yards and a touchdown.
