North Muskegon picks up fifth straight win, downs Montague 27-7

North Muskegon picked up its fifth straight win Friday night, beating Montague in a West Michigan Conference crossover game. The Norse got out to an early lead and never looked back, winning 27-7.

James Young got the scoring started with a 4-yard run in the first quarter to make it 7-0. An 8-yard run by Denny Belmonte later in the frame extended the lead to 14-0. Montague’s lone score came on an Adam Baird 1-yard run in the first quarter, making it 14-7.

Neither team scored in the second quarter, leaving the halftime score 14-7.

North Muskegon added a pair of touchdowns in the third to close out the scoring. Young found Ben Meyers for a 12-yard touchdown, then Meyers scored another TD on the ground to bring the game to a 27-7 final score.

Young finished with 263 passing yards on 24-for-31 passing with a TD and two interceptions. Carsen Moat was his top target, hauling in seven receptions for 79 yards. 

Belmonte totaled 58 rushing yards, while Meyers had 50 yards receiving and 48 yards rushing. Belmonte and Sam Gallo led the defense with seven tackles each. TJ Byard had an interception for the North.

Chase Gowell was 7-for-23 passing for 125 yards and an interception for the Wildcats. He also made two interceptions on defense. Baird led the team with 112 rushing yards, while Isaiah Atchison was the top receiver with four catches for 97 yards.

Ryver Jarka led the Montague defense with 10 tackles, followed by Silas Jancek with nine. Baird and Rodney Brassfield both had a sack. 

North Muskegon is now 5-1 with five straight wins. The Norse are 3-0 in the WMC Rivers division. Montague drops to 2-4 on the season, including 1-2 in the WMC Lakes division. [1] [2]
