The Mona Shores football team lost a 20-point lead on Thursday night and fell 31-27 to Rockford in a clash of West Michigan powers.

Brandon Bankard rambled for a 13-yard score to put Mona Shores ahead with just 49 seconds left in the first quarter.

Dahmir Farnum punched in a three-yard rushing touchdown to put the Sailors ahead 12-0 with 9:10 left in the second quarter.

Bankard then broke loose for a 15-yard touchdown run to give Mona Shores a 20-0 lead with 4:30 remaining in the second.

A 30-yard touchdown pass from Rockford’s Mac VandenHout to Brody Thompson made the halftime score 20-7.

Kewaun Farnum scored on a four-yard touchdown run with 5:17 remaining in the third quarter to extend the Sailor lead to 27-7.

With 1:34 remaining in the third, a bad snap on a punt gave Rockford a safety and made the score 27-9.

VandenHout broke loose for a 21-yard score to cut the Sailor lead to 27-17 with 7:12 remaining in the game.

VandenHout then found Alex McLean for a 24-yard touchdown pass to make the score 27-24 with 6:12 left.

With just 4:01 remaining, Rockford scored the final touchdown on a 65-yard pass from VandenHout to Thompson.

Mona Shores, now 1-1, will host Holland next Friday.
