It’s been a good two weeks for first-year head coach Zach Gropp and the Kent City Eagles, who are 2-0 after winning a 28-27 thriller over Central Montcalm Thursday night.

The Eagles trailed by two touchdowns after one quarter, then responded with two rushing scores in the second quarter.

Caden Hartzell and Kyler Larson each punched in a touchdown to help the Eagles pull within 21-14 at halftime.

Kent City’s Mason Westbrook added a rushing touchdown in the third quarter to make it a 21-20 game.

Central Montcalm added another score, then Kent City responded with a touchdown pass from Larson to Ari Baker and a successful two-point conversion, giving the Eagles a 28-27 win.

Kent City was led on offense by Westbrook with 103 yards rushing while Hartzell added 30 yards. Larson totaled 76 yards passing and 51 yards rushing.

On defense, the Eagles were led by Westbrook and Chase Moreno with eight tackles each while Kyle Monterusso totaled six.

Kent City will host Watervliet net week.
