Big Reds overcome slow start, pull away from Union for 43-21 win in O-K Green action

The Muskegon football team recovered from a slow start to pick up a road win Friday night. After falling behind 13-0 and trailing at halftime, the Big Reds exploded in the second half to claim a 43-21 win over Grand Rapids Union.

Muskegon trailed 21-13 at halftime, but outscored the Red Hawks 29-0 after the break.

Union scored the first two touchdowns of the game before Muskegon got on the board with a defensive score. Princeton Blackmon returned an interception 73 yards for a score, bringing Muskegon within 13-7 with 4:51 to play in the first half.

Jakob Price gave Muskegon its first lead minutes later on an 18-yard run, making it 14-13. The lead didn’t last, however, as Union scored just before the half to take a 21-14 lead.

Destin Piggee scored on a 62-yard touchdown pass from M’Khi Guy on the first play after halftime to even the score at 21-21. He added a 15-yarder later in the quarter to put Muskegon ahead for good at 29-21.

Guy broke free for a 67-yard TD run later in the third, making it 36-21. Another Guy touchdown run, this one from 21-yards, in the fourth was the game’s final score. 

Guy led the Big Reds with 128 rushing yards and was 10-12 through the air for 133 yards. Piggee had 99 receiving yards and 49 rushing yards, while Price totaled 70 yards on the ground.

Darekeo Speech led Muskegon with 13 tackles. Blackmon, Julian Neely and Adrian Rankin Jr. each had six tackles.

Muskegon is now 4-2 overall this season and 3-1 in the O-K Green. The Big Reds face Wyoming next week. [1]
