A dominant defensive effort and a steady running game propelled Kent City to an opening night win over Newaygo, 20-0, on Thursday.

The Eagles swarmed the Lions, racking up 12 sacks on the day. Mason Westbrook led the team with seven tackles, while Dylan Sutton intercepted a pair of passes.

Westbrook also led the offense, piling up 116 yards on just 10 carries. Caden Hartzel ran five times for 36 yards and a touchdown.

Quarterback Kyler Larson was 4-for-11 passing for 54 yards to go with 50 yards and a pair of scores on the ground. 

Kent City starts the season 1-0 and will host Central Montcalm next week.
