The Fremont Packers had to call a time out late in their game with Hart on Friday to discuss how to do a victory formation on offense.

That hasn’t been necessary at Fremont very much in recent years, because victories have been few and far between.

In fact, before Friday, the Packers had only four wins over the past seven seasons.

That’s why Fremont’s stunning 22-8 upset of Hart on Friday on the opening night of the season was so special.

It was extra exciting for first-year head coach Jared Hudson.

Justin Dirheimer, who had a big night in Fremont’s win.

“We have definitely tried to bring in a different type of energy, and the kids have done a nice job of buying in,” Hudson said. “The excitement around the program has been kind of infectious.

“I think the other end of it is that, after not winning very much for so many years, the kids are finally fed up with it. If there’s going to be change you have to be sick of losing.”

After a scoreless first quarter, Hart jumped on the scoreboard first with a 10-yard rushing touchdown in the second quarter and took an 8-0 lead.

Fremont responded with nine seconds left in the first half with a two-yard touchdown run and two-point conversion run by Kyler DeKuiper, leaving the game tied 8-8 at halftime.

The Packers took a 14-6 lead on a pick-six by Michael Romero early in the third quarter,

Fremont nailed down the victory with a four-yard touchdown run by Justin Dirheimer and a successful two-point run by Owen Hertel.

Dirheimer led the Packers with 182 yards rushing on 31 carries. Romero led the defense with six tackles and one interception while Hertel had four tackles.

“I am definitely happy for the kids,” Hudson said. “Hopefully we will be able to build off from this victory. We got 20 dudes and they play hard. When you got that it makes it easy to coach.”
