Sometimes it’s super exciting, like on Friday night when the Muskegon Clippers came from five runs behind and beat the Michigan Monarchs with a walk-off homer in the ninth inning.

Sometimes it’s a little less dramatic, like on Saturday when the Clippers broke a tie in the eighth inning and stole an 8-6 victory over the Monarchs with a few key hits, including one very long homer, plus some timely walks and an insurance sacrifice fly.

Any way it happens, the Clippers are finding ways to win, and have put together a nice little three-game win streak. They are now 6-5 on the season, the first time they’ve been above .500, and are suddenly tied for second place with the Monarchs in the Great Lakes League’s Northern Division, one game behind first-place Lima.

The Clippers will try to finish off a sweep of the Monarchs on Sunday night at Marsh Field.

“These guys keep on fighting and seeing what happens and that is the biggest thing for this group,” said Clippers manager Logan Fleener. “If you can find something that makes you different as a team at any level, generally you’re going to have good results.

“These guys have fought no matter what happens at any point of the game. Our lineup is on fire right now. We talked about winning the series, but now we have put ourselves in a position to get a sweep and add wins.”

The Clippers countered off the bat of Trent Nielson, who hit a mammoth three-run homer to give Muskegon a 3-2 advantage in the bottom of the first.

The Monarchs tied the game in the sixth inning, then added a run in the seventh to take a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the seventh.

The Clippers took back the lead in the seventh, scoring three runs on just one hit while taking advantage of a couple Monarch defensive miscues. They tied the game on a wild pitch, then scored on an RBI single from Stoney Smith and a sacrifice fly by Jacob Anderson.

The Monarchs tied the game 6-6 by scoring two runs in the eighth inning, then the Clippers made their final move.

Fermin Osio drew a bases-loaded walk that scored the game-winning run, then Logan Todd added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly.

Muskegon relief pitcher Lukas Brewer finished the game by striking out the side in the ninth after giving up a lead-off single and got the save.

Ben Alderson tossed the victory by recording the final out in the eighth inning, while starting pitcher James Geshel had a no-decision, tossing seven innings while allowing four runs on five hits with five strikeouts.

Nielsen and Smith led the Muskegon offense with two hits apiece while Colin Cornwell, Anderson and Cooper Mills each added single hits.
