The Montague baseball team started regional play with a bang on Tuesday, downing Grand Rapids NorthPointe Christian 16-1 in a five-inning game.

The Wildcats scored five runs in the first inning, one in the second, two in the third and eight in the fourth.

Starting pitcher Kade Johnson tossed 3.2 innings, giving up two hits and three walks with seven strikeouts. Reliever Nick Moss finished the game and had one strikeout.

Moss led the way offensively with three hits and five RBIs. Johnson had a triple and knocked in two runs.

Montague, now 23-14 on the season, will play either Lansing Catholic or Laingsburg in the Division 3 regional finals on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Davenport University. The winner will advance to the state quarterfinal game at 3 p.m.
