The Fruitport baseball team is now one win away from a regional championship after easily dispatching Tri-County 17-1 on Thursday at Whitehall High School.
The Trojans took control by scoring five runs in the first inning. Aiden Vela started things off when he was hit by a pitch, Gavin Reames singled, Cody Matuz reached base on an infield single and two runs scored on a throwing error. Mayson Whitlow and Brady French completed the big inning with back-to-back singles.
Matuz started on the mound and pitched three innings, striking out two with no walks. Reames relieved and combined with Matuz for a no-hitter. Tri-County’s only run came after a throwing error and wild pitch.
Reames had a big night at the plate with four hits and two RBIs while Matuz had three hits and knocked in three runs.
Whitlow and French each finished with two hits, and French had three RBIs.
Fruitport now advances to Saturday’s regional finals to play Bay City John Glenn at 12:30 p.m. at Clare High School. The winner will advance to a state quarterfinal game later in the day.
