Tuesday softball roundup: Reeths-Puffer’s Duffey throws no-hitter, then perfect game in doubleheader

Reeths-Puffer pitcher Caitlynn Duffey was on top of her game Tuesday, turning in two masterful pitching performances in a doubleheader sweep of Grand Rapids Union. 

Duffey threw a no-hitter in the opener, striking out eight batters, as the Rockets won 21-2. She topped herself in the second game, throwing a perfect game with eight more strikeouts in a 17-0 win.

Kaylee Jones belted a homerun for the Rockets in the opener. Natalie Kunnen, Paige Primmer and Mady Snyder all had multiple hits in Game 1, with Primmer and Snyder collecting four RBIs each as well. Duffey and Jones both drove in three in the opener.

Megan Barmes led the offense in the second game with two hits and three RBIs. Primmer had two more hits, while Jones and Madi Kunnen both had a double. 

North Muskegon tops Whitehall

The North Muskegon softball team took down Whitehall 6-4 in West Michigan Conference action Tuesday night.

Leading the Norse bats were Baila Lang and Maddie Balon, both collecting multiple hits on the evening. Balon and Megan Houseman both homered for the Norse.

In addition to her offensive contributions, Balon picked up the win as the pitcher Tuesday night. She struck out 11 in seven innings of work.

Illiana Hatcher and Megan LeTrea both had two hits to lead the Vikings offense. 

Hudsonville scores 7 in the first inning, beats East Kentwood

The Hudsonville softball team got off to a hot start Tuesday, scoring seven first-inning runs in a 14-1 win over East Kentwood.

Megan Beemer and Annika Talsma led the charge, as both collected three hits and drove in two runs. Ashley Sorrell had three RBI for the Eagles.

Elly Koopman was in the circle for Hudsonville, allowing just five hits and striking out two. 

Hudsonville finishes with a conference record of 17-4, good for second place in the OK Red. 

Fremont picks up walk-off win

After dropping the first game of a doubleheader with Reed City by a score of 13-1 Tuesday, Fremont responded with a walk-off win in extra innings in Game 2 to 17-16. 

Sage Vandenberg had the winning hit in the nightcap with a walk-off RBI single.

Vandenberg, Savannah Keur and Haley Zerlaut each had three hits for Fremont, while Madeline Baden and McKenzie Gugins had two each.

Although game one was lost for Fremont, bats caught fire for the Lady Packers in game two with Sage Vandenberg, Savannah Keur, Haley Zerlaut, Madeline Baden and McKenzie Gugins all collecting multiple hits- featuring a walk-off single by Vandenberg in extra innings. 

Mona Shores falls to Grandville

The Sailors dropped a non-conference game with Grandville Tuesday night by a score of 5-0.

Leading the Sailors on offense was Maggie McCarthy, who went 3-for-3 at the plate. Pitching for the Sailors was Kristen Hylland, who gave up nine hits and struck out two.
