Baseball roundup: Holton sweeps rival Hesperia on Friday, Mona Shores sneaks past Jenison on Saturday

The Holton baseball team picked up a pair of wins on Friday over rival Hesperia in CSAA Silver Division action.

The Red Devils coasted to a 10-0 victory in the opener. Steven Kersting earned the win on the mound, striking out four and allowing only two hits.

Jason Hibbs led Holton at the plate with three hits and three RBIs, followed by Austin Fowler with two hits and two RBIs and Brodrick Fialik with two hits with one RBI.

Holton took a 5-2 win over the Panthers in Game 2. Fowler started on the mound, allowing one run and striking out four batters, and Kersting earned the win, allowing one run and striking out two in relief.

Kevin Erickson and Carter Brant each totaled one hit and one RBI for the Red Devils. Rice Robins had two RBIs and Gabe Colon had one.

Mona Shores claims a tight win over Jenison

The Sailors came out on top against the Wildcats on Saturday, defeating Jenison 3-1.

Trevor Cunningham earned the win from the mound, allowing five hits and striking out four batters.

Jaxon Huffman led the Sailors with two hits and two RBIs. Mark Konecny landed two hits and got an RBI, with Aaron Piasecki landing two hits of his own.

Game 2 was called due to rain.

Mona Shores is now 14-2 for the season, with a 9-0 record in O-K Green action. The Sailors will face Reeths-Puffer in an important doubleheader on Tuesday.

Shelby takes two from Hart in rivalry doubleheader

Shelby beat Hart in two well-played conference games, 3-2 and 1-0.

In the opener, Shelby scored the winning run in the top of the seventh inning. Hart pitcher Blake Weirich was the hard-luck loser, allowing only two hits, striking out 10 and walking only one. Logan Purdy had two hits for the Pirates.

Hart pitcher Ty Schlukebir had a fate similar to Weirich’s in the nightcap, striking out seven and walking only one in the loss. Weirich, Purdy, Brandon VanderZanden and  Kody Charron had hits for the Pirates.

Ravenna takes two games from Western Michigan Christian

The Bulldogs took an 8-2 win in Game 1 against the Warriors.

The Warriors only totaled five hits in Game 1, with Sam Liggett hitting a triple and Jono Clausing hitting a double.

Game 2 was cut short by rain. Ravenna held a 5-1 lead when the game was called.

Liggett, Clausing, and Sam Sipe each landed one hit for WMC in the shortened game.

Grand Haven turns the game around to defeat Montague

Montague held a 5-0 lead at the top of the fourth inning on Saturday, but the Buccaneers scored 10 runs over the next two innings and won 11-5.

Grand Haven’s Trenton Caswell earned the win from the mound, pitching three innings and striking out three batters.

Jared Tithof led the Bucs with three hits and three RBIs, followed by Xavier Rodriguez with one hit and two RBIs. Caswell, Nate Stafford, Ty Sandwick, and Dayton Deal each landed one hit and got one RBI. Owen Brunsting also had an RBI.

Hayden McDonald and Chase Gowell each landed two hits for Montague. Moss and Kade Johnson each totaled one hit and one RBI, and Peterson got an RBI as well.

Game 2 was canceled after the first inning due to rain.

Whitehall drops two games to Forest Hills Eastern

The Vikings fell 6-0 in Game 1. They did not manage a hit.

Whitehall lost the second game 7-0 while managing two hits.

Hudsonville comes out on top against Gull Lake, South Christian

The Eagles took a 9-8 victory over Gull Lake after a back-and-forth game on Saturday.

Todd Raredon earned the win on the mound for the Eagles, striking out five batters.=

Dakota Visser led Hudsonville with three RBIs. Gage Robertson and Logan VanRegenmortor each totaled two hits and an RBI. Ryan Arends and Bryce Baar each got an RBI as well.

On Monday the Eagles downed Grand Rapids South Christian 6-4. Owen Huizenga got the win on the mound, pitching three scoreless innings of relief with five strikeouts.

Jayden Timmer tied both a Hudsonville and state record by being hit by a pitch four times in the game.  Timmer also added a big two-RBI single in the seventh inning.

Hudsonville is now 10-2 on the season.
