The puck finally bounced in the Muskegon Lumberjacks’ direction on Sunday in a weekend of tight one-goal games.
The Jacks lost by a single goal on Friday and Saturday in Dubuque and Cedar Rapids, respectively, but turned the tables on Sunday with 3-2 victory over the Green Bay Gamblers at the Resch Center in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
Rookie Jake Richard scored the game-winning goal at 13:52 of the third period. Richard also had assists on both of the Lumberjacks’ two prior goals.
The Lumberjacks are now one victory, or a Cedar Rapids loss, away from officially clinching a playoff spot on the USHL’s Eastern Conference. They improved to 30-22-6 on the season.
Muskegon has now completed six games of its long nine-game road swing with a 2-4 record. The Jacks will play two games next weekend in Plymouth, Michigan against the Team USA 17-Under squad, then will play in Chicago against the Steel on April 22.
The final home game of the regular season will be April 23 against Chicago.
Owen Mehlenbacher, who had two goals on Saturday, remained hot by scoring his 15th goal of the season at 5:37 of the first period, giving the Lumberjacks a 1-0 lead.
Jake Braccini put Muskegon up 2-0 with a tally at 1:03 of the second period.
Green Bay stormed back with two goals in the third, from Luke Weilandt and Owen Murray, to tie the game at 2-2, before Richard settled the issue in the Lumberjacks’ favor with the final tally.
Goalie Chase Clark got the win for the Lumberjacks, stopping 31 of 33 shots.
