Baseball roundup: Huffman throws no-hitter, ties school strikeout record in Mona Shores win over Union

Jaxon Huffman tied a Mona Shores school record with a dominating performance on the mound Tuesday afternoon. The Sailors hurler struck out 17 batters while tossing a no-hitter in a win over Grand Rapids Union as part of a doubleheader.

Huffman’s gem, his first career no-hitter, came in a 4-0 win to start the twin bill. His 17 strikeouts tie a record originally set by Roger Hansen in 1965, according to coach Brandon Bard. 

Mason Brunworth and Jason Anderson provided offensive support with two hits each. Aaron Piasecki had a triple and scored twice.

Mona Shores dominated the second game, scoring a 14-1 victory. Diego Pena had three hits, an RBI and scored twice. Mark Konecny had two hits and three RBI and Anderson had two hits, two walks and two runs.

Javanni Johnson pitched the complete game in Game 2, allowing one run on two hits with five strikeouts.

Mona Shores is now 4-0 overall this season, including 2-0 in OK Green play. 

Muskegon Catholic Central picks up first win

The Crusaders topped West Michigan Aviation Academy 12-7 to claim their first win of the new campaign. 

Jacob Lyonnaise and Braden Gustin both drove in three runs for MCC. Lyonnaise had three hits total and picked up the win on the mound. Gustin had two hits.

Sam Convertini had a pair of hits and scored three runs for the Crusaders.

Muskegon Catholic Central is now 1-1 on the season.

Jackson Core’s walk-off hit lifts Spring Lake over Holland Christian

Spring Lake pulled out an exciting 6-5 win over OK Blue rival Holland Christian. Jackson Core smacked a game-winning, two-run double to give his team the win in walk-off fashion.

Kreegan Deverney picked up the win on the mound, pitching the final three innings. Core, Nick Penrice, and Zach Schlepp picked up a pair of hits each. 

The second game was called early due to darkness with Spring Lake leading 5-0.

Reeths-Puffer sweeps conference doubleheader with Wyoming

The Rockets dominated the first game with a 13-0 win. Alex Johnson blasted a solo homerun, while Brody Panozzo, Jaxson Whitaker, Kyle Schlaff and Jett Boersema all played a role in a big nine-run second inning.

Jordan Bochanek started on the mound and tossed three scoreless innings. Alex Orchard finished on the mound.

Reeths-Puffer took the second game by a score of 9-3. The contest was called after six innings due to darkness. Kaden Edwards was 3-for-3 with a homerun and four RBI to lead the offense, while Johnson smacked another homer. Panozzo and Orchard each had multiple hits.

Trent Reichert started on the mound, followed by Panozzo and Caiden Theisen.

Hesperia sweeps Chippewa Hills by scores of 8-4 and 17-5

The Panthers piled up runs in a sweep of Chippewa Hills Tuesday. In Game 1, Travis Kurtz and Blake Slayer each had a pair of hits. Kurtz, Kohen Heckman and Hunter Billman all had two RBI.

Hesperia smacked 14 hits in just three innings in the second game. Armando Escobedo led the way with three hits and four RBI.

Fruitport tops Coopersville 9-1, leads in suspended second game

The Trojans cruised to a 9-1 win over Coopersville in the opening game of an OK Blue doubleheader Tuesday.

Cody Matuz got the win on the mound, pitching 5.2 innings, striking out 12 and allowing just one run on two hits. Matuz and Ryan Bosch both had two hits, while Brady French drove in two.

Fruitport holds an early 7-3 lead in the second inning of Game 2, which was suspended due to darkness.

Mason County Central picks up non-conference sweep of Holton

The Spartans picked up wins of 9-4 and 6-5 in a Tuesday doubleheader. 

Jacob Johnson and Ethan Huffman both drove in three runs in Game 1 to lead the offense. Will Chye, Simon Chimel, Gage Ruiz, and Raiden Keefer all picked up a hit each. Owen Chimel picked up the victory on the mound. 

In Game 2, Owen Chimel led the offense with a pair of RBIs. Simon Shimel picked up a pair of hits, while Tyler Thurow, Ruiz, and Johnson chipped in with a hit.
