Tuesday baseball roundup: Fruitport pitcher Cody Matuz has a strong outing in Fruitport’s 7-3 victory over Western Michigan Christian

The Fruitport baseball team opened its season with a 7-3 victory over Western Michigan Christian on Tuesday in non-conference action.

Starting pitcher Cody Matuz got the win, tossing four innings while striking out 10 and walking two. Reliever Gavin Reames also pitched three innings, striking out four.

Brady French had two doubles and two RBIS for the Trojans while Aiden Vela and Mayson Whitlow also had two hits apiece.

Sam Sipe had three hits and drove in three runs for Western Michigan Christian. Relief pitcher Alex Wagenmaker tossed three quality innings, only allowing one hit with three strikeouts and no walks.

Ravenna sweeps a doubleheader from Holton

Holton led 1-0 in the fourth inning of the opener, but Ravenna scored three times in the bottom of the fourth to steal the victory in Game 1.

Travis May pitched a five-inning no-hitter in the opener, striking out 10 and walking four.

The Bulldogs completed the sweep with a 13-0 win in the nightcap. Ravenna had 13 hits, with Thomas McCullough leading the way with three hits and three RBIs. Hunter Hogan added a double and triple and scored three runs, while Dayton Thomas and Owen Scott had two hits apiece.

Ravenna stole 13 bases in the game, with Thomas getting four and Drew Mabrito stealing three.

Brandon Thomas and Dayton pitched the win, allowing two hits while striking out 11 with no walks.

Mona Shores downs Oakridge 20-3

The Sailors pounded out 17 hits in the victory, led by Mark Konecny, who had four hits, scored four runs and knocked in two. Landen Thalman added three hits and two RBIs. Jason Anderson had two hits and three RBIs, including the first home run of his high school career. Aaron Piasecki, Mason Brunworth and Jaxon Huffman all added two hits of their own.

Huffman was the starting pitcher and earned the win, allowing two hits and striking out eight. Brady Recknagel tossed the final two innings, striking out two and allowing one hit.

Corey Vanderputte, Brody Jennings and Ryan Cribbins scored the Eagle runs.

Montague falls to West Ottawa 2-0

Montague got good pitching from starter Colton Blanktrom and reliever Kade Johnson, who combined for 11 strikeouts and only gave up two earned runs.

The problem was the lack of timely hitting. The Wildcats stranded 11 runners in scoring position. Hayden McDonald and Owen Peterson both had singles for Montague.
