Owen Varnado’s last-second layup propelled Western Michigan Christian to a thrilling win over Muskegon Heights in Lakes 8 Activities Conference action Friday night.
Trailing by one in the final seconds, Varnado rebounded a teammate’s miss and scored the winning basket at the buzzer to give WMC a 51-50 victory.
The basket was part of a great game for Varnado as he scored 22 points and collected 19 rebounds.
The Warriors led 10-8 at the end of the first quarter, 18-15 at halftime and 31-28 heading to the fourth. Muskegon Heights had rallied to take the lead late before Varnado’s game-winner.
Sam Liggett chipped in 11 points for WMC and Joe Waller scored eight points and grabbed seven rebounds.
Jaquan Matthews had a huge night for Muskegon Heights, connecting on eight 3-pointers and scoring a game-high 28 points.
The Warriors are now 3-7 on the season and 3-3 in the Lakes 8. Muskegon Heights drops to 7-4 overall and 4-2 in the conference.
