A pair of free throws from Braden Gustin with less than a second left propelled Muskegon Catholic Central to a thrilling win over Zion Chrsitian Tuesday night.
The Crusaders led 39-37 with 6.9 seconds left, but fouled Zion’s Andrew Leep attempting a three-pointer. He hit two-of-three free throws to tie the game.
Gustin then took an inbound pass and pushed up the floor, drawing a foul with 0.9 seconds to play. He stepped to the line and sank both foul shots to give MCC a 41-39 win.
The Crusaders needed a big second half comeback to get in position to win Tuesday’s game. Zion Christian led 12-7 after one quarter and 28-17 at halftime.
The MCC defense clamped down after halftime though as MCC won the third quarter 10-2 to pull within 30-27. A 14-9 edge in the fourth pushed the Crusaders over the top to victory.
Chase Willer scored 12 points for MCC in addition to collecting five steals and five offensive rebounds. Gustin totaled 10 points, including eight in the fourth quarter, and five steals. Jaden Johnson had eight points and 12 rebounds for the Crusaders.
