Ravenna boys get a big lead in the second quarter, then hold off Shelby 57-48 in conference action

The West Michigan Confernce boys basketball championship race is tight this year, with several contenders, but so far Ravenna has remained at the top of the pack.

A dominant second quarter propelled the Ravenna to a 57-48 victory over Shelby on Tuesday in a key conference battle.

The Bulldogs led 14-12 after one quarter, then took a commanding 35-23 lead into halftime. Shelby fought back with an 18-10 advantage in the third quarter, but couldn’t close the gap.

Ravenna was hot from the floor, shooting 51 percent from the field

Grant Becklin paced the Bulldogs with 21 points while Kyle Beebe tossed in 12. Joseph Hayes led Shelby with 18 points.

Ravenna improved to 6-3 overall and 5-1 in conference play. Shelby fell to 4-3 and 3-2.
