Friday boys basketball roundup: Varnado’s double-double leads WMC to win over OV

Owen Varnado’s double-double led the Western Michigan Christian boys basketball team to a 64-56 win over Orchard View on Friday in Lakes 8 action.

Varnado scored 22 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for WMC. It was his first game of the season, returning from an injury suffered just before the start of the season.

The Cardinals led 19-10 after the first quarter of play and took a 30-24 lead into halftime.

The Warriors outscored the Cardinals 25-13 in the third quarter to take a 49-43 lead into the fourth quarter.

Jared Olsen led WMC in scoring with 25 points.

The Cardinals were led by Darius Williams with a game-high 26 points, while Delaney Oakes scored 13.

Orchard View is now 2-4 overall this season.

LAKES 8 CONFERENCE

LUDINGTON 64, MUSKEGON CATHOLIC CENTRAL 38- Eleven different Oriole players found the scoresheet in a Lakes 8 win on Friday night.

The Orioles jumped out to a 15-4 lead after one quarter, and led 34-13 at halftime.

The Crusaders outscored the Orioles 12-9 in the third quarter, cutting Ludington’s advantage to 43-25 at the start of the fourth quarter.

Peyton LaCombe paced the Orioles with 14 points, while David Shillinger finished the contest with 10.

The Crusaders were led by Jaden Johnson with 11 points.

O-K BLUE CONFERENCE

 COOPERSVILLE 51, FRUITPORT 45- Travis Rosel and Luke Sanford scored 15 points apiece as the Broncos won an O-K Blue Conference contest on Friday.

The Trojans were led by Ryan Glaus with 12 point, while Gavin Reames finished with 10.

O-K RED CONFERENCE

GRAND HAVEN 65, CALEDONIA 48 – Grand Haven continued the hot start to the season with another O-K Red Conference victory on Friday.

The Buccaneers are now 8-0 overall and 3-0 in conference play. Bahir Neely led Grand Haven with 20 points in the victory.

ROCKFORD 56, HUDSONVILLE 54-The Eagles lost a tight O-K Red Conference game on Friday night.

Hudsonville fell behind 16-8 after the first quarter but were able to cut the lead to one in the second quarter trailing 25-24 at halftime.

The Rams extended the lead in the third quarter, taking a 44-39 lead into the fourth quarter.

Mason Dykstra paced the Eagles with 16 points and eight rebounds. Brayden Szamrej chipped in with 15 points, while Aden Zank finished the contest with 13 points.

O-K GREEN CONFERENCE

MONA SHORES 61, ZEELAND EAST 39-The Sailors picked up an O-K Green Conference victory on Friday night.

Mona Shores jumped out to a 16-7 lead after the first quarter and led 32-15 at halftime.

The Sailors maintained the advantage through the third quarter, taking a 43-28 advantage into the fourth quarter.

Keontae Richards paced the Sailors with 16 points and four steals. Parker Swartz chipped in with 15 points and six rebounds, while Ethan Krueger finished the evening with eight points.

The Sailors improved to 5-4 overall, and 2-1 in conference play.
