FRUITPORT- When two teams as fast-paced as Coopersville and Fruitport go up head-to-head, it’s bound to be an interesting game, with both squads constantly sprinting up and down the floor.
But in the end Coopersville worked the pace a little bit better and came away with a 52-45 victory over Fruitport on Friday night in O-K Blue action.
Coopersville’s Travis Rosel, one of his team’s leading scorers in the game, acknowledged the importance of that aspect of the Broncos’ attack.
[1]“We run a lot of quick-up in practice,” Rosel said. “Coach always tells to us get up there if we want to beat teams, because we’re not the tallest, but we are pretty fast.”
The Broncos improved to 2-1 in conference play with the win, and kept pace with the top teams in the O-K Blue.
“We really hope to just keep pushing, keep it rolling,” Rosel said about the Broncos’ bid to remain in conference title contention. “I’m just excited for (our next game) because I know on any given day we can definitely get a lot of points and go on runs.”
The lead changed hands throughout the game, but Coopersville’s used its speed and grit to keep pace with Fruitport in the early going and take control late in the contest.
[2]Fruitport maintained a small advantage throughout the first half, leading 15-9 after one quarter and 25-24 at halftime. Gavin Reames led the Trojans with five points in the first and Andrew Spyke had six in the second. Luke Sanford scored seven points for Coopersville in the second quarter.
Coopersville went on a 7-0 run in the third quarter to take a six-point lead, the Fruitport answered with a 6-0 run, and the game was tied 37-37 headed into the fourth. Reames scored seven points and Rosel has six in the third.
The Broncos took the lead for good by opening the fourth quarter with an 8-0 run. Rosel and Sanford each had four points down the stretch for Coopersville.
Fruitport didn’t score for almost six minutes in the final quarter, and was not able to make up the difference as the clock ran down.
Rosel and Sanford each finished with 15 points for Coopersville. Ryan Laus led Fruitport with 12 points while Reames finished with 10.
The Broncos are now 5-1 overall on the season. Fruitport fell to 4-4 overall and 0-3 in the O-K Blue.
