Tuesday boys hoops roundup: Coopersville opens the new season with a 47-37 win over Holland

Coopersville’s boys basketball team opened the season with a road victory over Holland on Tuesday night. The Broncos led wire-to-wire in a 47-37 victory. 

Strong showings in the first and third quarters propelled Coopersville to the win. The Broncos outscored Holland 11-5 in the opening frame before edging out a 16-15 second quarter advantage to lead 27-20 at halftime.

Coopersville extended the lead with a 9-3 edge in the third to lead 36-23 heading to the fourth. Holland won the final frame 14-11, but Coopersville held onto a double-digit advantage.

Luke Sanford led the Broncos with 17 points on the night. Isaiah Currie added seven and Mark DeVries scored six. 

NORTH MUSKEGON 53, MUSKEGON CATHOLIC CENTRAL 23 — The Norse led 17-5 after the first quarter and never looked back in an opening-night win. North Muskegon led 25-10 at halftime and 42-17 after three quarters. 

Troy McManus had a big night for the Norse with 18 points, eight rebounds and three assists. Jason Bogue added 10 points and Sam Gallo scored nine.

Bradon Gustin and Jaden Johnson each had five points for the Crusaders.

HART 57, WESTERN MICHIGAN CHRISTIAN 47 — The Pirates came from behind to pick up a win in their season opener against WMC.

The Warriors started well, leading 15-9 after one quarter and 31-27 at halftime. Hart turned the game in the third quarter with a 17-5 advantage to pull ahead 44-36. The Pirates won the fourth quarter 13-11 to close out the win. 

Parker Hovey was a force for Hart, totaling 19 points, 13 rebounds and four steals. Caleb Bitely added 17 points for the Pirates, while Jake VanderWilk had seven points and six rebounds. 

Sam Liggett led WMC with 20 points, including four makes from beyond the arc. Jaron Childers added 10 for the Warriors.

KENOWA HILLS 61, POTTERS HOUSE CHRISTIAN 27 — The Knights opened the season with a commanding win on the road. 

Javion Otten led the way with 16 points and swiped nine steals defensively. Evan Breuker added eight points for Kenowa Hills, while Juston Stulpe and Preston Mull scored seven each.

HESPERIA 51, WALKERVILLE 47 — The Panthers held off a fourth-quarter run to claim a win Tuesday night. Hesperia starts the season 1-0 after going winless last season.

The Panthers led 15-8 after the first quarter and 25-18 heading to halftime. Hesperia extended the lead to 38-29 heading to the fourth. Walkerville had an 18-13 edge in the fourth, but Hesperia held on for the win.

Maverick McKinnon was the star offensively for Hesperia with a game-high 25 points. Zach Glenn added 13 for the Panthers and Maddox Mosley scored eight.

OAKRIDGE 50, FRUITPORT 47 — Oakridge held off a second-half comeback attempt from Fruitport to claim an opening-night win on Tuesday. 

The Eagles held a 13-11 lead after one quarter before extending the lead to 30-19 at the halftime break. Fruitport began its comeback in the third, gaining a 16-9 edge to pull within four. The Trojans pulled with two late in the game, but fell short in their comeback attempt.

Andrew Spyke led Fruitport with 16 points. Bode Anspach was also in double-figures with 14 points, while Ryan Lucas and Paschal Jolman scored five each.
