The Whitehall boys basketball team picked up its first win of the season with a non-conference victory over Fremont Tuesday night. Whitehall led throughout and claimed a 63-48 win over the Packers.

The Vikings held a slim 20-15 lead after one quarter, but used a big second quarter to lead 39-22 by halftime. Fremont cut into the deficit with a 17-10 edge in the third to draw within 49-39 heading to the fourth. Whitehall won the final frame 14-9 to seal the win.

Nate Bolley provided a scoring punch for Whitehall with 21 points, including four three-pointers. He also grabbed eight rebounds. Brodie Fogus turned in a double-double with 12 points and 15 rebounds.

Red Watson added 11 points and four assists for the Vikings, while Kyle Stratton scored eight.

Jordan McDonald led Fremont with 22 points and eight rebounds on the night. Gavin Richards added nine points and grabbed 10 boards.

Whitehall improves to 1-2 on the season, while Fremont falls to 1-2. 

ORCHARD VIEW 55, BIG RAPIDS 49 — Darius Williams recorded a triple double, his second of the season, as Orchard View overcame a 12-point halftime deficit to defeat Big Rapids in non-conference action. 

Williams scored 30 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and dished out 10 assists. Delaney Oakes finished 10 points and five rebounds for OV, while Stephon Oakes recorded seven points and 15 rebounds. 

With the win, the Cardinals improve to 1-1 overall.

BENZIE CENTRAL 69, LUDINGTON 61— The Orioles lost a hard-fought battle with Benzie Central in non-conference action on Tuesday night. 

The Orioles fell behind in the first quarter 16-12, but were able to cut the lead to 28-27 at halftime. Benzie Central outscored the Orioles 24-20 in the third quarter, extending the lead to 52-47 heading into the final quarter of play. 

Ludington pulled even in the fourth, but Benzie Central ended the game on a 12-4 run over the final four minutes to close out the win.

David Shillinger paced the Orioles with 19 points. Peyton LaCombe finished with 16 points, while Levi Laman chipped in with 11. 

With the loss, the Orioles fall to 1-2 overall.

FRUITPORT CALVARY CHRISTIAN 70, HESPERIA 19 — The Eagles dominated from start to finish in a non-conference game. Calvary led 25-5 after one quarter, 50-10 at halftime and 63-13 at the end of the third.

Bradley Richards led FCC with 18 points, seven rebounds and seven assists, while Jacob May added 16 points and eight assists. Ethan Cammenga scored 15 and had five steals.

Gabe Gould scored five points to lead Hesperia, which was playing without two of its starters.

Fruitport Calvary Christian moves to 4-1 on the season, while Hesperia falls to 1-2. 

COOPERSVILLE 51, BYRON CENTER 33 — A strong second half effort allowed the Broncos to pull away after a tight first half.

Coopersville held a slight 14-10 lead after one and led 26-22 at halftime. After the break, however, the Broncos outscored Byron Center 25-11 to pull away. 

Luke Sanford led Coopersville with 18 points, followed by Isaiah Currie with 12. The Broncos are now 2-0 on the season.

OAKRIDGE 66, GRANT 45 — Ethan Jozsa had a big night for the Eagles, posting a double-double. Jozsa had 29 points and 12 rebounds on the day.

Oakridge led 32-27 at halftime before pulling away in the second half. The Eagle lead grew as large as 22 points in the fourth quarter.

Garrett Weaver finished with 13 points, five rebounds and four assists for Oakridge. The Eagles are now 2-1 on the season.

Seth Schuitema paced the Tigers with 29 points.

GRAND RAPIDS CHRISTIAN 51, HUDSONVILLE 48 — Hudsonville led for most of the game, but couldn’t hold off a late run from Grand Rapids Christian Tuesday night.

Hudsonville led 18-13 after one quarter and 31-26 at halftime. Grand Rapids Christian closed the gap to 41-37 heading to the fourth and eventually took the lead with three minutes remaining. 

Aden Zenk led Hudsonville, now 1-1 on the season, with 26 points and nine rebounds. Nate Clark added 15 points.

KENT CITY 49, CENTRAL MONTCALM 39 — The Eagles improved to 2-1 on the season with a win over the Hornets in non-conference action on Tuesday night.

Kent City held a 16-15 lead after the first quarter before Central Montcalm tied the game at 24-24 heading into halftime. The Eagles jumped back ahead, leading 34-31, at the end of the third quarter.

Kyler Larson paced the Eagles with 21 points, while Hayden Carlson finished with 18 points.

MUSKEGON HEIGHTS 72, KALAMAZOO PHOENIX 52 – Daquan Matthews had a big night for the Tigers, scoring 26 points with eight three-pointers.

Ja’Kari Edwards added 15 points, highlighted by five dunks, while Dajuan Garrett had 10 points and Jonathon Moore contributed nine for Muskegon Heights.

William Coleman led Kalamazoo Phoenix with 19 points.
