The Muskegon Lumberjacks’ five-game winning streak came to a halt on Saturday night in a 6-4 loss to the Chicago Steel on the road.
Chicago grabbed a two-goal lead after one period, then outscored the Jacks in the third period after Muskegon tied the score.
The Steel, the first-place team in the USHL’s Eastern Conference, displayed its offensive balance with six different players finding the net.
The Lumberjacks fell to 11-9-3 on the season and remain in fourth place in the Eastern Conference. They will return to action in a Wednesday morning game against Team USA in Plymouth, Michigan, then will play two games in Green Bay against the Gamblers on Friday and Saturday.
The Jacks’ next home game will be on New Year’s Eve against the Youngstown Phantoms.
The Lumberjacks lost on Saturday despite outshooting Chicago 35-20.
Joe Miller and Evan Hunter both scored for the Steel within the first three minutes of the game, and Chicago led 2-0 at the first break.
Nathan McBrayer scored his first goal of the season at 12:47 of the second period, pulling the Jacks within one. Sam Lipkin answered for Chicago less than two minutes later, then Muskegon’s Jake Richard scored his first goal of the season at 16:53. The Steel led 3-2 headed into the third period.
Muskegon’s Phil Tresca tied the game 3-3 with his 11th goal just 58 seconds into the third. But Chicago scored three of the final four goals (from Mick Thompson, Jake Livanavage and Luke Levandowski) to secure the win.
Ben Strinden also scored his 11th goal of the season for Muskegon in the third.
Lumberjacks goalie Platon Zadorozhnyy took the loss in goal.
