Friday girls basketball roundup: Muskegon Catholic grabs first win with second-half comeback

A big second half effort propelled the Muskegon Catholic Central girls team to its first win of the season Friday night. The Crusaders overcame a halftime deficit to beat Manistee 64-45 in the Lakes 8 opener for both teams. 

After trailing 16-15 after one quarter and 30-29 at halftime, MCC took over in the second half. The Crusaders had a 16-10 edge in the third quarter to take a 45-40 lead, then won the fourth quarter 19-5 to seal the win. 

Erin LaVigne led a balanced MCC attack with 16 points, followed by Claire LaVigne with 15 and Grace Staniforth with 14. 

MCC is now 1-2 on the season and begins Lakes 8 conference play at 1-0. 

LAKES 8

MUSKEGON HEIGHTS 55, ORCHARD VIEW 27 – The Cardinals trailed 11-8 after the first quarter, 22-17 at halftime and 41-23 heading into the fourth.

OV was paced by Grace Gardner with eight points, while Johnia Heath and Liz Estelle each added six. Mia Martin chipped in with 10 rebounds and four blocks.

WHITE CLOUD 38, HESPERIA 22 – The Panthers trailed 9-7 at the end of the opening quarter, 21-13 at halftime and 30-18 through three quarters.

Emmett Tinkham led Hesperia with seven points, while Emma Joppich added six points and Adriana Slater pulled down eight rebounds.

MORLEY STANWOOD 54, HOLTON 26 — Ryann Robbins recorded a double-double for the Red Devils, who fell in their CSAA Silver opener Friday night. Robbins scored 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. 

Abbie Fowler finished with four points, six assists and five steals for Holton.

The Red Devils fall to 1-2 overall and are 0-1 in conference play. 

BIG RAPIDS 59, FREMONT 29 — A slow start was too much to overcome for the Packers in CSAA Gold action Friday night. 

The Cardinals jumped out to a 16-2 lead after the first quarter and led 29-13 at halftime. The Cardinals extended the lead to 42-23 after three quarters of play. 

Mia Witte paced the Packers with 12 points, while Jessica Bennett finished with seven points and six rebounds. 

With the loss, the Packers fall to 0-3 overall.

MICHIGAN D LEAGUE

BRETHREN 39, PENTWATER 35 – The Falcons trailed 23-15 at halftime before going on a 13-4 third quarter run to take a 28-27 slim lead heading into the fourth.

Pentwater ended the game by getting outscored by a 12-7 margin during the fourth quarter.

The Falcons were led by Mikaylyn Kenney with 10 points, nine rebounds, five blocks and six steals. Jocelyn Richison added 10 points, three assists and three steals.

Pentwater is now 1-2 overall and in the conference this season.

NON-CONFERENCE

SPRING LAKE 67, WYOMING LEE 21 – The Lakers jumped out to a 21-2 first quarter lead and cruised throughout the contest.

Alexa Carter paced Spring Lake with 13 points and eight rebounds, while Nicole Schmitt added 12 points and eight rebounds. Jennifer Judge chipped in with nine points and four rebounds, and Meah Bajt contributed with eight points, five rebounds and five steals.

The Lakers also had solid performances from Emma Nicles and Lauren Cavalier with eight points apiece.

Spring Lake is now 3-1 overall on the season and will face Grand Haven next Friday.
