Girls hoops roundup: Mona Shores tops FHE, Kenowa Hills wins big and more from opening night

The Mona Shores girls basketball team started the season off on the right foot with a big win over Forest Hills Eastern on Tuesday. The Sailors pulled away after a tight first quarter to pick up a 54-31 win. 

Mona Shores led by just a point at 16-15 after the opening quarter, but allowed just 16 points the rest of the game. The Sailors extended the lead to 32-19 by halftime and were up 42-23 heading to the fourth. 

Mona Shores outscored the Hawks 12-8 in the final frame to close out the win.

Olivia Sobczak led the Sailors with a game-high 15 points. Khaleeya Cook also scored in double-figures with 13 points. Ali Phillips and Jenna Tierman both scored eight for the Sailors.

Mona Shores begins the season 1-0. 

KENOWA HILLS 52, NORTHVIEW 28 — Adrianna Marsiglia started the season off strong with a 27-point effort to lead the Knights over Northview. 

Erin Murphy followed with nine points for Kenowa Hills and Arena Guilarte added eight.

The Knights led 7-1 after the first quarter and 18-16 at halftime before pulling away in the second half. The score was 34-23 after three quarters.

The Knights start the new season at 1-0. 

KENT CITY 41, MUSKEGON 30 — The Eagles picked up a road win against Muskegon to open the season Tuesday night.

Kent City started the game hot, grabbing a 16-3 advantage after one quarter. Muskegon battled back in the second quarter to pull within 24-16 at the half. The Eagles led 37-26 after three quarters. 

Madelyn Geers led Kent City with 17 points, followed by Lexie Bowers with 14. 

McKynna Sims led Muskegon with 11 points and three assists Tuesday. Iyanna Brooks added six points and eight rebounds, while Alayna Hussey scored four points.

SPARTA 41, OAKRIDGE 23 — A tough first quarter was too much for Oakridge to overcome in its season-opener against Sparta on Tuesday.

The Eagles trailed 13-2 after the opening quarter before playing an even second and entering the half down 18-7. Sparta extended the lead to 32-14 after three.

Anna Lundquist posted a double-double for Oakridge, tallying 11 points and 11 rebounds. She added two blocks as well. Destyni Lane scored six for Oakridge.

The Eagles begin the new season 0-1.

ALLENDALE 35, WHITEHALL 29 — The Falcons came out on top in a tight game to open the season.

Allendale led 9-8 after one quarter before the Vikings pulled even at 13-13 heading to the half. The Falcons pulled ahead 25-23 after three quarters and outscored Whitehall 10-6 in the fourth to seal the win.

Charley Klint led Whitehall with seven points and 13 rebounds, while Lola Buckner chipped in six points.

Allendale opens the season 1-0, while the Vikings start the year 0-1. 

NEWAYGO 47, SHELBY 26 — The Tigers led at halftime, but couldn’t hold the lead in their season opening game.

Shelby started strong with a 10-4 edge after one quarter and held a 19-18 halftime lead. The Lions took command after halftime with a 29-7 edge, including 19-4 in the third quarter.

Kendall Zoulek paced Shelby with eight points and five rebounds. Aubrey Klotz and Molly Schultz both scored five for the Tigers.

Shelby begins the season 0-1.

MASON COUNTY CENTRAL 41, MANISTEE 31 — The Spartans overcame a tough first quarter to pick up a win in their opener. 

The first quarter was all Manistee, as they started the game on an 11-2 run to lead by nine after one quarter. Mason County Central bounced back in the second, outscoring Manistee 13-5 to get within 16-15 at halftime.

The Spartans dominated the third quarter with a 14-6 edge to take the lead 30-21. MCC closed out the game with a 12-9 advantage in the final quarter. 

Jaden Petersen was the leading scorer with 14 points, while Charlie Banks added a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds. Grace Weinert also added three points and 10 rebounds for MCC.

The victory puts Mason County Central at 1-0 to start the season.

POTTERS HOUSE CHRISTIAN 42, MUSKEGON CATHOLIC CENTRAL 16 — The Crusaders struggled in their season opening game, falling to Potter’s House Christian. 

Muskegon Catholic trailed 12-3 after the first quarter, 26-7 at halftime and 37-9 after three. 

Erin LaVigne led MCC with seven points. The Crusaders open the season 0-1.

HOLLAND 53, FRUITPORT 22 — The Trojans trailed by just a point after the first quarter, but couldn’t keep up with Holland after the opening frame.

Saide Norwood led Fruitport with nine points, followed by Sabi Meil with seven points. Anna Bol grabbed six rebounds for the Trojans and Auebre Johnson had three steals.

The Dutch led 13-12 after the first quarter, 28-15 by halftime and 39-19 at the end of the third.

The Trojans begin their season with an 0-1 record.
