The Western Michigan Christian soccer team ended its season with a heartbreaking 2-1 overtime shootout loss to Potter’s House on Thursday in a Division 4 district semifinal game.
The game was unusual, because the first half of regulation was played on Wednesday, then suspended due to weather at halftime with a 0-0 score. The second half on Thursday was also scoreless, leading to the two overtime periods.
WMC took a 1-0 lead about three minutes into the first OT on a goal by Tekalegn Vlasma. Pottter’s House tied the score late in the first overtime period, then the second OT was scoreless.
That led to a shootout, with five players from each team going one-on-one with the other team’s goalie. Potter’s House scored four times in the shootout, the Warriors only scored twice, and that decided the game.
Potter’s House had an 8-6 advantage in shots on goal. WMC goalie Jared Olsen made seven saves.
Western Michigan Christian finished the season with an 11-10-1 record.
