Spring Lake football team rebounds from last week’s loss with a 27-20 conference victory over Coopersville

The Spring Lake football team rebounded from its first loss last week with a tight 27-20 O-K Blue conference victory over Coopersville on Friday.

Alex Lee was the hero of the night for the Lakers, rushing for 179 yards on 26 carries with four touchdowns. He also had a big night defensively with six tackles and two interceptions.

Coopersville had the only score in the first quarter on a four-yard burst by Dylan Merlo.

Spring Lake responded with the only score in the second quarter on a 33-yard rushing touchdown by Lee with 4:25 remaining in the first half to make it a 7-7 game at halftime.

Lee went back to work in the third quarter, breaking loose for a 40-yard score to give the Lakers a 14-7 lead with 5:48 remaining in the third.

Lee added a four-yard touchdown in the third, putting the Lakers up 21-7.

Coopersville scored on a 26-yard touchdown reception by Merlo in the fourth quarter, then Lee answered with a four-yard TD to put the Lakers up 27-14.

Coopersville added one more touchdown, a 10-yard catch by Merlo, but Spring Lake hung on for the win.

Jackson Core had six tackles and one interception for Spring Lake while Joe Westhoff added an interception.

The Lakers, now 6-1, will face Grand Rapids West Catholic next week. Coopersville dropped to 5-2.
