The Muskegon Catholic football team opened postseason play with a convincing 54-6 victory over Delton Kellogg on Friday in a Division 7 pre-district game.
The Crusaders jumped out to a 16-0 lead at the end of the opening quarter and led 32-0 at halftime. MCC had a 48-6 advantage through three quarters before scoring the lone touchdown in the fourth.
Quarterback Elliot Reigler opened the scoring for MCC with a 27-yard touchdown run with 8:15 left in the first quarter. The Crusaders added another score just a minute later with a 19-yard run from Joe Waller.
Reigler increased MCC’s lead to 24-0 with a 40-yard touchdown pass to David Hill. Waller closed out the first half scoring with a one-yard touchdown scamper.
Sam Convertini added a five-yard TD run early in the third to make it 40-0 in favor of MCC.
Delton Kellogg finally scored on a five-yard run with 5:29 remaining in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 40-6.
The Crusaders responded with a 19-yard run by Convertini with four seconds left in the third quarter to increase their lead to 48-6.
MCC closed out the scoring in the fourth quarter as Tramel Caviness recovered a fumble in the end zone with 4:15 left in the game.
Convertini paced the Crusaders with 73 yards rushing on six carries and two touchdowns, while Waller had five attempts for 51 yards and two touchdowns.
Reigler was 5-for-6 passing for 98 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for 43 yards on four carries and a score.
The Crusader defense was led by Nick Powell with six tackles while Sam Kartes added five.
Muskegon Catholic will face Ravenna next weekend in the D7 district finals.
