The Muskegon Lumberjacks started a weekend road trip with a disappointing 6-3 loss to the Madison Capitols on Friday night.
The Jacks led 3-2 early in the third period, then allowed four unanswered Madison goals.
Muskegon is now 1-4-2 on the season. Madison improved to 6-1-1. The two teams will meet again in Madison on Saturday night.
The Lumberjacks opened the scoring at 8:10 of the first period when Ben Strinden found the net. Madison tied the score with a power play goal by Tyler Haskins, before Muskegon’s Emil Jarventie scored at the 17:55 mark, giving the Jacks a 2-1 lead at the first break.
Madison caught up on a goal by Jack Musa early in the second period, and the score was 2-2 at the second intermission.
The Jacks went ahead 3-2 on another goal by Strinden at 6:17 of the third period, but then the game got away from Muskegon.
Madison scored four goals down the stretch, by Jack Horbach, two by Jake Dunlap within 13 seconds of each other, and a final tally by Nathan Lewis with about 2 ½ minutes remaining in the game.
Muskegon had a 32-30 edge in shots on goal. Madison had the advantage in special teams play, scoring twice on seven power plays while holding the Jacks scoreless on four opportunities.
Lumberjacks goalie Jan Skorpik took the loss, stopping 24 of 30 shots.
